Back in 2004, I almost had a job offer in White Plains, so I would have had to keep a car here in Manhattan and do the reverse commute out to Westchester to go to work. I always had this fantasy - what would I buy? Given the money I was making at the time, I could have gone up to 80K without a problem.
Pretend you’re me ... what would you do?

I assume the car could be no newer than 2004, right?

How much would a used DB7 be in 2004? The six cylinder would do fine. That would be a good one.

street or garage parking?
I find it hard to justify a nice car in the city when the odds of it getting beat up are high.

I am anal in the extreme, so I’d wind up spending $450 a month to keep the car in a garage. It would probably be 4 or 5 blocks from here, but it would be protected from the elements.

That’s two gens ago? I might have the previous gen - could afford a used current gen, but any M5 is a magnet for my soul.

That (they) is/are an excellent suggestion, although it would cost me $900 a month to keep two cars garaged here. I can get an S2000 on Turo, and I just might in the next couple of months.

Given the budget I’ve dreamed up, I think I’d go Demuro Aston or newer. And BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY has a nice ring to it ....

I’d say that for that sort of scratch, I’d want it to be 5 years old or less ... I like safety features.
Planning a trip to see mom, 911 convertible is on the menu.
I need something to amuse me to deal with mom’s issues. I need something to take my mind off what she’s going through.

Today, with my current income, I’d call it 40-50K ... I would be open to anything interesting. Of course, I have no need of a car, got Turo. Looking at a 911 droptop for my next rental.

Oh, if only I could find one that wasn’t fucked with ... should have bought one in ‘97 when I got out of law school. ‘97 SHO was my choice then, but I regret that choice in hindsight.

That is, as a wise man once said to me, one idea. I’d have to be wowed by it, because I recall being impressed with the balance of the Boxster when I drove an early example back in ‘99.

The driving experience of the Boxster has always been nice, but I personally find them quite lack luster and boring. I need a car that would wow me in the corners and much as it would when I look back at it in the parking lot.

I’ve always like the looks, and as I close in on having had a license for 40 years, I’ll admit my days of clipping apexes are probably over.

GASP!!! How dare you sir? So 56 and you’re giving up on spirited driving? I can certainly understand that idea, but I want to believe it’ll be fun, fast, and manual cars till the grave.

In the improbable event that we needed to buy a car, SigOther won’t learn to drive a stick - her father tried to teach her (he owned a Nissan garage in Okinawa!) but no. At this point, I drive maybe 3 times a year. I have access to a free car when I go to MD to see family, and Turo has an M4, an S2000, an SL, and a few other interesting convertibles if I want to spend some money and have some fun. But I’d be renting from a private owner, and I’m not taking their baby to a track or tossing it around like a toy.

Damn sig others ;) Well at least you have your priorities, plus you could just get something with the manual/auto

Oh, and there’s a 911 convertible on Turo as well, and I just might go there .... 7 speed manual.

Yeah, an F1 transmission would work. She hates convertibles, but a hardtop convertible would also work - unless I pushed the button to drop the top, she’d never know.
This is the 911 in question - maybe a 6 speed (I was wrong). And I’d spend the extra money to get it delivered in the city.

Happy wife, happy life ... we’re shopping for an apartment to buy right now, and she’ll make the final decision. I’m just something decorative at this point ....

I agree with the happy partner happy life, but I don’t know if I would ever allow myself to be a decorative piece in such a large decision. Nor could I think be allowed only 1 car.

We live in Manhattan - I’m on the subway most of the time, in taxis some of the time, and drives 3 or 4 times a year. If I had a boring Volvo S80 it would be on Turo and I’d drive it ... almost never.

Oh I totally understand that happens. I just mean personally, I don’t think I could handle that. At least not in my current state of being.
